Excerpt:

Abruptly, Tom was dragged out of their trance by Rodolphus' voice. "Tom, old fellow, can I steal a dance with my wife?"

He came to himself with a little gasp.

"Rodolphus," he managed, frantically piecing together the shards of reality. Bella's husband. They were dancing.

"Cygnus is watching," Rodolphus said in a low voice. "The old boy's about ready to have your head."

His gaze darted to the clock. They'd been dancing for quarter of an hour. Probably staring deep into one another's eyes the whole time.

"Let him," he said venomously. Merlin knew what heavy-handed guilt the old bastard had been heaping on Bella, to cultivate her obsession with his idea of good. He'd probably been doing it since the cradle.

"Go and cool off," Rodolphus said with a tone of warning.

No one else could have done it and lived to tell the tale, but Rodolphus was, in his own way, an extraordinary man – dedicated, completely without hunger for personal power or gain. To the extent that Tom trusted anyone, he trusted Rodolphus. And he trusted Rodolphus now.

He battled with it for a moment, then wordlessly, he dropped his hold on her, turned on his heel, and walked briskly away.

As long as daddy's watching Tom would do good not to show too obviously how much he's interested in his daughter, hm? I wonder if Rodolphus is breaking the moment because of his worries about what Cygnus would do or because of plain jealousy. I think it's a mix of both...

It could be a bit of both, you know. Rodolphus is asexual in Elemental, but in some ways that might actually breed jealousy. He does genuinely love her, and he can't fail to realise that if/when Bella and Tom ever get together, he will lose her in some ways.

I can understand Rodolphus here very well. Asexuality can be a big reason for jealousy, I know that. He would think that she might be attracted to Tom for sexual reasons, that Tom could give her something he could never give. It's surely a hell of struggle for him.

Indeed. I keep thinking I must write something along those lines. (Real was in that vein, although not from an asexuality perspective). I much prefer to write a bonded-but-platonic Bella and Rodolphus than a hostile-blatant-adultery scenario. It isn't that I can't imagine Bella openly cheating on him - I think, if she didn't respect him, that she wouldn't hesitate to embarrass him - but it's sort of too easy and obvious. It's sort of more difficult - in a good way - to make them actually come to some sort of accord about it all.

I really love your approach on Bella's and Roldolphus' marriage - that they handle each other with respect, and that he's so careful and forgiving. I've read this story right away and it was hard to hold back my tears. Rodolphus begins to turn out as another favourite character, thanks to you. I've never paid any attention to him before, but now I respect him deeply, because he gives so much - for her sake in first place, but also for his own.

Thank you! I think that Rodolphus is genuinely good, as a person, and that really comes out even though he was born into the "wrong/bad" side.

Nobody's only good or evil after all - that does apply even on Voldemort, so why not on Rodolphus. It's not his fault that he was born into this family, so he just does what everybody does every day - he tries to survive. He found out that the best way for him to handle the situation is to go along with it. For him it seems to be the lesser evil. I really love that in this story he offers Bella to pretend he's Tom for her. It shows that deep inside he does love her, although he doesn't admit it that openly. He's a good guy indeed, he just has to live in the wrong world.
