Excerpt:

Lucius and Narcissa's wedding was a sombre affair.

Narcissa had collapsed not long before the wedding. Tom hadn't troubled himself with the details, but he did know she'd been treated for some sort of malignancy, and now her ability to give Lucius an heir was in question. Lucius had defied his father to marry her; Abraxas was conspicuous by his absence. Narcissa was still not well, and the newlyweds passed only a single dance before retiring to their table.

While Tom had little patience for heroic gestures, the whole episode had heartened him somewhat. At least Lucius had fortitude for something. Perhaps he would be of use after all.

This is sooo beautiful!
It's a sad story about Narcissa, and the fact that Lucius marries her anyway shows him in a whole new light!

Oh - and I often play with questions about Narcissa's fertility. She had Draco much too old for an otherwise dutiful Pureblood bride!

I wonder how wizards treat infertility. Do they have any potions or spells, or how did they manage to help Narcissa? It's really an interesting question...

It is an interesting question. I suspect they're quite limited in what they can do, depending on the cause at least. (With Narcissa, I just took the view that eventually she did conceive naturally - either the malignancy was in one of her ovaries but she conceived with the other, or it affected her uterus so it was difficult but not impossible for her to carry the pregnancy, or it was the treatment itself that caused a deterioration, but not destruction of her ova). I mean, any problems to do with sperm-meeting-egg, like fluid imbalances or sperm motility or allergy to the partner's sperm or issues with the reproductive tracts, could probably be overcome with magic (like somehow transporting/Apparating the sperm and/or ova into the uterus, bypassing intercourse). But I doubt the magical world has much in the way of things that can be done to make non-viable ova or sperm, viable.

Wow, you really spent a lot of thoughts on this matter! I mean, you really thought about it scientifically. You're really one of those writers who spend time on research and everything. I'm sure this is one of the reasons why reading your stories is so enjoyable. Things just match.

And I'm glad for Narcissa that, no matter how they finally solved the problem, she was able to conceive her son. I'm sure that the day she was told she's pregnant was one of the happiest in her life.

Absolutely. Along with Lucius, Draco really is her world - and in this universe, really her greatest victory as well.

She's a strong and admirable woman indeed. Your stories build a whole new universe around all the HP books, and it's a complex universe that I really like. You're doing all those characters justice that JKR never really cared for.

Thank you! I think JKR was trying to write fairly one-dimensional bad guys - which I suppose is consistent with the children's book starting premise (though it certainly didn't stay a children's book!). But she's got enough general sophistication that she dropped enough background for them to turn into something else. When you read her talking about the bad guys, she certainly doesn't sound like she actively set out to make them multi-faceted - it just sort of happened.

Thank you!

I do love Lucius and Narcissa together, and I think for all his flaws that he loves her a great deal. Given all his other tendencies you'd sort of expect him to be a misogynist too, but in fact, we hear again and again that he has deferred to her and followed her.

I love them as a couple too. I especially love Narcissa - it was so heartwarming to see her in DH2, to see how much she cares for her son and what she does to make sure he's OK. I also think Lucius is not that bad as a husband and that he really loves her, although he would never show that in public. When they're alone he's surely very gentle and careful.
