Elemental: How Could He? by deslea Elemental: How Could He? by deslea
Another illustration from the fic Elemental. Bella learns that Cygnus intends to keep her and Tom apart from beyond the grave. Far worse is the realisation that he didn't have faith in her.

Specs and credits: Hexagon 2.5, Daz Studio 4.6 Pro, 3Delight.

Excerpt:

"There are conditions," Xalvador said with a tone of caution.

Tom glanced at Bella. Her expression was one of irritation - and worry. She knew as well as he that when gifts from Cygnus came with strings, the strings were long.

"In the event that you are named as a third party in any divorce of Madam Lestrange, the bequest will be forfeit, and Madam Lestrange will not receive a share in its redistribution."

Bella jolted visibly. The colour drained from her face.

"In the event that you father a child with Madam Lestrange, whether legitimate or not, whether brought to birth alive or dead, the bequest will be forfeit, and Madam Lestrange will not receive a share in its redistribution."

She gasped. Flinched, as though she'd been slapped.

Rodolphus spoke up valiantly. "Any child of Bella's is a child of mine. There will never be a question about it from me."

Xalvador's eyes narrowed. "It will be my duty as executor to seek the appropriate medical confirmation in the event of a birth. Your acknowledgment of the child, while noble, is irrelevant."

Tom's and Rodolphus' gazes met, then fell on Bella. She was very pale, gripping tight to the arms of the chair.

"In the event that you marry Madam Lestrange, whether subsequent to divorce, nullity, or her husband's death, the bequest will be forfeit, and Madam Lestrange will not receive a share in its redistribution."

That did it. Her chin began to tremble visibly. Hot, angry tears streaked down her cheeks. "How could he?" she demanded in a low, hurting voice. "Bad enough to think it, but to let it be said - in front of everyone like that -"

Oh wow, I have to admit I'm more and more intrigued by Rodolphus. He's really a good husband despite all the things he knows are going on.

He is. I didn't actively plan him that way initially - I envisaged them initially as in a clear marriage of convenience where he was aware but largely indifferent - didn't make an issue of it but didn't try to help particularly either. But I think there's something really devoted and selfless in Rodolphus - the way he looked for Voldemort when everyone else was diving for cover, and unlike Bella, not motivated by being in love with him, for instance. And that always comes out when I write him. One thing I think would be interesting to write, or at least read, is a story where Rodolphus is largely indifferent to Bella other than as partners in battle, but he passionately loves Voldemort - almost conceptualising himself as Voldemort's devoted priest, and Bella is just a fellow priestess who he respects but doesn't feel anything much for.

That is a very interesting story idea indeed, and I'd love to read it too. I'm also sure that there's no story out there by now that shows Rodolphus being in love with Voldemort while Bella's just a sidekick.

That's one I'd like to see. There's no real reason why not. I did read one extra-short piece once that had Voldemort, Bellatrix and Rodolphus in a threeway relationship, drawn together by them all having a death kink. It could have been atrocious in the hands of a bad writer, but it was actually quite well done.

Unfortunately it's very hard to find the really good stories among the thousands of bad ones (there are more than 600,000 HP fics on fanfiction.net alone!)... I have so little time, so even if there's the perfect Voldemort fic out there, I'll most likely never find it. That's why I'm always happy to no end when I find a jewel like your Biophilia. Would you please give me a link to that story you've mentioned?

Ugh - the link to my bookmarks only works for me. You'll just get random bookmarks. Sorry about that.

Here 'tis: archiveofourown.org/works/9248…

And yes, I know what you mean about the search for good fic. I have a few good ones bookmarked here. Archiveofourown.org has a better batting average than ff.net because writers are more likely to be involved with fanfiction as a culture (as well as an activity). But there's still some dreck there, of course. There's also the Crack Broom Tags page and the older Crack Broom Memories page.

Thank you for the link. But as you said in the other message the one to the faves doesn't work. It's a pity, though, because I'm sure there are some awesome stories on your list... Thanks for the other links as well - I'll try them out as soon as I have more time for reading.

Btw, I'm kinda fascinated that you're using the word "dreck"... It's a German word, actually, and has the exact same context that you're using it in (I'm sure you know that already. I just had to point it out becaue I'm always fascinated when I find another German word that found its way into the English language - normally it's just the other way around).

Hee! I was shooting for a bit of satisfaction that she's reacting exactly how he planned, and also a bit of very reluctant, don't-want-to-admit-it feeling bad about upsetting her too...
